Why Healthcare Teams Fail Without Trust

In 2019, a major hospital in the UK (name withheld) made national headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Will Brakes (not real name), a patient in urgent need of surgery, died after a 12-hour delay.

The inquest later revealed that communication breakdowns and leadership failures were at the heart of the tragedy.

The hospital admitted to serious failings in care.

It’s a painful reminder:

No matter how skilled your team is or how advanced your systems are, the consequences can be fatal when trust and communication fail.

Though less catastrophic, I’ve seen versions of this story in my leadership journey.

Early in my career, I was obsessed with competence and credentials.

However, experience has shown me that trust is the true multiplier of force. 

Without it, teams crumble, but with it, they soar.
